The ability to mentalise is an absolutely essential social skill, and a prerequisite for effective leadership. As people, we are not able to directly observe the thoughts and feelings of others. In order to understand what is going on in other people’s psyche, we must instead use our ability to interpret states of mind. This ability is called mentalisation.
